5. PLASMA DISPLAY PANEL

Flat panel displays have always been the key to wall-hanging TVs and space saving PCs, but for many years, it looked like there would always be severe limitations in size, making the technology peripheral rather than central to the AV/PC industries. With its mass-produced large sized plasma display panels, however, Fujitsu has opened up a whole new chapter in the history of this product. With the start, in October 1996, of mass production of 42 inch PDPs and the announcement of the first commercial shipments to customers worldwide, PDPs are well on the way to becoming the display of choice for large-size flat panels. Wall-hanging televisions have finally moved from the realm of science fiction to the reality of everyday life.

Fujitsu was one of the early developers of PDPs and has worked on the technology for a quarter of a century. The company has remained at the forefront of this technology with its proprietary AC technology method and a circuit for gradiationally driving a flat panel device"). The first commercial product was a 21 inch gray-scale display marketed in 1991, but with demand moving rapidly in favor of colour, production of 21 inch colour panels started in 1993. The new generation of 42" displays announced by Fujitsu in the summer of 1995, is now in mass production, using the "Imagesite" brand name. And already, Fujitsu is looking ahead to even larger screens in the near future.
