12. HOW DOES THE NEW FLAT TV DIFFER FROM CONVENTIONAL LARGE-SCREEN TV SETS?

There are a number of striking differences relating to the new Plasma technology on which the New Flat TV is based. This contrasts with the conventional CRT display technology, which has served us well right from the earliest TV developments of some 70 years ago. Indeed, through constant development and refinement the CRT has reached the stage where it offers an excellent  price /performance. This means it will undoubtedly remain the dominant mass-market display technology for quite some years to come.

However, the CRT is still relatively bulky, with a significant front-to-rear depth which places a finite minimum size on the housing of the set. And it is also heavy, due mainly to the fact that the CRT display is a large, thick-walled glass tube and requires large electromagnets to control the electron beams. CRT tubes can also be subject to disturbance from surrounding magnetic fields, whether from the earth itself or nearby systems and equipment.

Another benefit of the Plasma screen is the elimination of display distortion. Because there is no conventional tube with electron beams and a curved front display area, a perfect picture geometry can be achieved. The problem of geometrical distortion at the edges and in the corners - caused by the difficulty of focusing the electron beam in a CRT tube - is also eliminated, as are problems like convergence and image alignment problems.

Flat TV has perfectly even brightness over the entire screen area, other disturbances in the overall picture quality are also eliminated. For example there is no vignetting - the effect caused by lower brightness around the edges of a conventional CRT tube. And `spot blooming', which is seen as a localised area of higher brightness caused by defocusing of the electron beam in a CRT tube, is also eliminated.

The New Flat TV is also relatively light, with a weight of only around one-third that of a CRT-based set with a comparable screen size. And thanks to the fact that the set's Plasma technology uses no electromagnetic deflection, its picture quality is unaffected by any magnetic fields.
